Sudden Happiness is a live recording of the group Triot and John
Tchicai during their tour together in Denmark and Sweden in May
2002. The music of Triot can be seen as an amalgamation of the introverted
and sometimes melancholy Finnish character and the more extroverted
and fun-loving Danish personality with shared interest in the Afro-American
musical tradition as an additional, unifying element. On this recording,
the legendary free-jazz saxophonist John Tchicai performs as Triot’s
featured guest and his collaboration with Triot’s saxophonist
Mikko Innanen is pure magic throughout the recording. Tchicai is
best known for his recordings starting from the early 1960s with
John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor and many others.
Sudden Happiness was recorded at Musikhuset in Århus, Denmark
(May 19, 2002); 1000 fryd in Aalborg, Denmark (May 21, 2002); and
Jazzhouse in Copenhagen, Denmark (May 23, 2002) by Thomas Vang.
The recording was mixed at On Location Studio in Copenhagen, Denmark,
by Thomas Vang and mastered at DER in Tammisaari, Finland, by Henrik
Otto Donner.
