Shadowglow contains a musical interplay between guitarist Raoul
Björkenheim and drummer Lukas Ligeti, two cosmopolitans currently
based in New York. The two musician/composers share a mutual interest
in the musics of the world which possibly has never been as clearly
demonstrated as on this recording wherein references to Asian, African
and European indigenous musical styles and, in particular, rhythmic
patterns can easily be detected. For the recording sessions, no
music was ”written”, but preparation consisted of intensive rehearsal
sessions where the two musicians improvised based on rhythmic patterns
or melodic ideas that they found to be of common interest.
Shadowglow was recorded and mixed in June 2003 at bassist/producer
Bill Laswell’s Orange Music Sound Studios in New Jersey with Robert
Musso as the recording engineer. In addition to his longstanding
collaboration with Laswell and the hundreds of sessions that he
has recorded and/or mixed, Musso is known as the leader of the now-defunct
group Machine Gun as well as for his many solo projects as a guitarist
and composer. The recording was mastered by Henrik Otto Donner and
Esa Santonen at DER in Tammisaari, Finland.
